Guardian Removes FGM Allegation

September 10th, 2013

On the 7th of September the Guardian published an article by Homa Khaleeli about Faduma Ail, an 86 year old Grandmother from Somalia. It reported that Faduma and her daughter both underwent female genital mutilation (FGM), however when it came time for Faduma’s granddaughters to undergo the invasive operation, she decided to step in and put an end to the vicious cycle.

The article originally suggested that FGM was practiced within the Jewish community. This is of course not the case and in fact FGM would be considered a grave violation of Jewish law. Milah UK, working with the Board of Deputies, contacted the Guardian about this misrepresentation and on the 9th of September the article was amended and the phrase relating to the Jewish community was removed.
